Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long term disability in Thailand, with over 200,000 people experiencing a stroke each year. Post-Stroke patients have suffered from a brain lesion that affects to the physical, psychological health and social living. They also have an increased risk for depressive symptoms, which may have an additional negative effect on their quality of life, an exacerbation of preexisting medical conditions, and an increase the risk of suicide. The objectives of this study were to determine the association between depressive symptoms and quality of life in post-stroke patients in the suburban area, Khon Kaen province; North-eastern part of Thailand. The study included 50 patients (29 men and 21women) having post-stroke conditions participated in the study. Mean age was 63 years (standard deviation ±14.21, range 58-72). The Health Survey 36-item Short-Form (SF-36) was used to measure Health-related quality of life (HRQoL). A symptom checklist and a questionnaire measure of depression on 1 month’s follow-up at participant homes. Of the 50 participants, 18 (36%) had depressive symptoms (score ≥10). HRQOL scores were low in the presence of depressive symptoms. The results of the study indicated significant correlations between depression and HRQoL p<0.005. This study shows that, the physical illness, particularly mental health, depressive affect, is an important factor in the determination of quality of life.
